Small 10″ ✕ 10″
Medium 16″ ✕ 16″
Large 24″ ✕ 24″
In this painting, I depict Chitto Harjo, a prominent Muscogee-Creek leader, during the Crazy Snake Rebellion. Chitto, also known as Wilson Jones, led the rebellion in the early 1900s to resist the U.S. government's efforts to dismantle tribal governance and communal land ownership among the Muscogee (Creek) people. The Crazy Snake Rebellion was a significant movement that highlighted the resistance of my tribe against the loss of our traditional ways of life and sovereignty.
In this painting, Chitto Harjo is on horseback, drawing inspiration from the iconic stature of Napoleon Crossing the Alps by Jacques-Louis David. Throughout the creation of this piece, I employed new techniques that have significantly advanced my practice.
The flowers in the painting are Indian paintbrushes, symbolizing the region of Oklahoma where Chitto Harjo led the Crazy Snake Rebellion, specifically Henryetta. These elements collectively aim to evoke a sense of history, resilience, and contemplation about the complexities of ongoing resistance movements.
